The overall aim of this research was to evaluate theeffect of physiotherapy in the acute and chronicstages of stroke in randomised controlled trials.Physiotherapy treatment using the Motor LearningProgramme is preferable to that using the Bobathconcept in acute rehabilitation of patients withstroke. There is no carry-over effect of gainsobtained during initial physiotherapy regimes onlong- term function if the exercises are notsustained. The association between walking and dynamic andstatic balance in acute rehabilitation of patientswith stroke is strong. Balance is closely related totask, e.g. walking, getting up from a chair, turning, and reaching and cannot be regarded asseparate from the task.A follow-up programme on a consultative basis is asbeneficial as a compulsory exercise programme. However, the exercises need to be encouragedandinstituted by medical staff with knowledge and aninterest in intensive functional exercise programmesindividually tailored for stroke patients.
