Jan Švankmajer, světově proslulý klasik nezávislého filmu, a Eva Švankmajerová, významná malířka se seznámili v r. 1960. Od té doby se jejich život i tvorba těsně prolínají. Velkolepou monografii, uvedenou kryptogramem, který sám o sobě vyjadřuje toto těsné pouto, koncipovali samotní umělci. Knihu uvádí teoretický text Františka Dryjeho Určující setkání. Následuje deset samostatných kapitol podle témat, která postupně zaujala jejich imaginaci (např. Eros a Thanatos, Historia naturae, Hmat a gesto, Manipulace a loutka, Alchymie a magie, Hry a sny atd.). Každé téma je bohatou koláží, poskládanou z velkého množství reprodukcí, záběrů z filmů a literárních textů (scénáře, básně, záznamy snů, interpretace vlastních děl, teoretické statě Jana Švankmajera i jiných). Na závěr jsou zařazeny vlastní biografie obou autorů, psané jako svébytný literární text, bibliografie, filmografie a soupis výstav.
